One of the things that always amazes me every time I see it, is how close God is to us, and how close we can get to Him. But there is a part of those situations that bothers me. It is how easily I forget the intimacy of my father-son relationship with Him. I have never been able to make the intense feeling of intimacy last, and I’m sure it is because I don’t pursue God as intently as I did my dad. Perhaps if I did, I wouldn’t be amazed when He does something sweet that demonstrates that he cares. Are you like that? Here’s one of God’s kind fatherly acts.

DRAPES FOR DOREEN

We were barely able to meet our obligations and feed our five children. So we didn’t have money for nice things, like pretty drapes and carpet.

Doreen endeavored to keep our home neat and clean. There were limits however, and one of them was our living room drapes. They were tattered and torn on the bottoms and just all-over worn out. About all you could say for them is that they covered the window. Even so, my wife, being the good soldier she was, tried to make them look nice. It was hopeless. Watching her working with those terrible drapes choked me up. Especially one day when her frustration became obvious. I couldn’t afford to even think about buying drapes, but there was something I could do.

My friend Walter and I often got together to pray. That night I remembered my poor wife struggling to make those wretched rags look good. So Walt and I prayed for new drapes for Doreen. I have to admit that we were both crying as we prayed.

Perhaps God cried with us because the next morning something remarkable and totally unexpected happened. The neighbor lady from across the street came walking over to our house with her arms full of draperies and asked my wife if she could use them! They were beautiful, just wrinkled and only a couple of months old. Doreen was absolutely delighted. I wish you could have seen her. It was then that I told her how Walt and I had prayed.

She washed them and laid them out to dry with the proper pleats. Then she hung them. Of course, coming from God, they were exactly the right color, width and length!

It’s a testimony of the truth of the Bible. For as it is written, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” 1 Pet 5:6 7 (NIV)
